Q: Do I have to make up the days that passed while I did not understand that I was required to make up these days? They occurred at a time when I was helping my family with many tasks outside the home, so my father used to say to me: “Do not fast, you are still young.” I am now in doubt that I have a fast I did not perform. Is it obligatory for me to fast them consecutively or separately? Do I have to feed people, and what is the method and type of food?
A: Every person who reaches Ramadan while being of the age of fasting must fast, except for one with a valid legal excuse, such as travel or an illness that makes fasting difficult. If the situation is as you described and you are of the age of fasting, then it is obligatory for you. Since you did not fast, you must make up the fasts, repent to Allah, and seek His forgiveness. It is not required that the days of making up the fasts be consecutive, but it is better to separate them. You must also pay an expiation for every day you delayed fasting until another Ramadan reached you. The expiation is feeding a poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of rice, wheat, or similar staple food of the country for each day. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
