Fatwa No. ( 18334 )
Q: My mother (may Allah forgive her and grant her a spacious place in Paradise) passed away before Ramadan this year, at an age of approximately one hundred years. In the last days of her life, she used to say that she had not made up the days she had broken during the months of
Ramadan due to menstruation , and that was out of her ignorance of the ruling. So, is it obligatory for us to fast and give charity on her behalf? If it is obligatory, please inform us, may Allah reward you with good, about the following: 1 - We do not know the number of days she missed, so how much should we estimate for her? 2 - Is it permissible for people other than her legal heirs to fast on her behalf, either for a wage paid by us or as a voluntary contribution from them? 3 - Do we fast first, or do we give charity? 4 - Is the charity given for each day on its day, or is it collected and given all at once? 5 - What is the amount of the charity, and is meat given with the rice or barley? 6 - Can the charity be given to charitable associations to spend it on those who are entitled to it? Knowing that there are enclosures near our house where some expatriates to the country reside: men, women, and children, and there is also a ribat (lodging for travelers) near us, but we do not know the extent of these people's need for charity. Please inform us of what is obligatory, may Allah reward you with all good.
A: It is prescribed for you to determine the number of days your mother missed, and to fast those days on her behalf, while feeding one poor person for each day the amount of one and a half kilograms of the local staple food, due to the delay; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1147 It is agreed upon as authentic, and the guardian is: the relative, and
They issued a fatwa that it is obligatory for one who delays making up Ramadan until another Ramadan without an excuse to feed a poor person for each day half a sa' of the local staple food, its amount being approximately one and a half kilograms, along with making up the days she fasted. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
