Explanation of how to pay the zakah on camels that are not grazing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q5: The questioner, S. B., says: My brothers and I bought a number of camels and placed them in a special enclosure from which they do not go out, and we feed them. After the first lunar year had passed, we paid their zakah. In the second year, we were told that we do not owe zakah as long as they are not grazing on their own. Is this correct, and what is obligatory for us in the future?
A5: Your question is general. If your intention with these camels is trade and to sell them for profit, then there is zakah on them, because they are considered merchandise for trade. The zakah is due on their value and what they are worth; you appraise them at the end of the lunar year at their worth and pay zakah on them at one-quarter of the tenth. However, if the purpose is to breed these camels, seek their benefit, and drink their milk, then there is no zakah on them as long as they are fed for most of the lunar year. If they are fed for most of the lunar year, there is no zakah on them. If they graze for most of the lunar year, then there is zakah on them, provided they reach the minimum threshold (nisab).
