Desert Dwellers: If Ramadan Arrives in Extreme Heat, They May Break Their Fast

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 15910 )
Q2: In the region of the Great Desert, the month of Ramadan may arrive
while people are in the summer season, making fasting difficult for them, and it may even become impossible for them, and this may continue for several years. How should these people fast? And what should the elderly do, who are unable to fast or to feed [the poor]?
?

A2: When the month of Ramadan enters, it is obligatory for every accountable, resident, healthy Muslim to fast it. Allah the Exalted said:
So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysفَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
Therefore, fasting is obligatory even if the weather is hot; because fasting in Ramadan is a pillar of Islam. If a person fasts and then suffers from severe thirst that he fears will lead to his death, he should break his fast by consuming what preserves his life, then abstain from food and drink and make up this day at another time. And Allah knows best. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
