The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18540 )
Q1: I am a young man, 29 years old, and Allah has decreed that I be afflicted with chronic end-stage renal failure. I am treated with hemodialysis three days a week. I fast one day and break my fast the next during Ramadan. I broke my fast for 12 days in the previous Ramadan of 1415 AH, and I have made up 5 of those days, leaving 7 days remaining. Question: Do I owe anything for the remaining seven days, and what should I do in this year's Ramadan? Knowing that this blessed month will be the same as the previous month last year, which was
fasting one day and breaking the fast the next due to this illness.
A1: Allah the Exalted has permitted the sick person who is unable to fast to break his fast in Ramadan. You owe nothing for the days you broke your fast except making them up. So make up those seven days whenever you are able, and likewise the days you broke your fast in the second Ramadan of 1416 AH; due to the generality of the saying of Allah, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:185] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
