Fatwa No. ( 13911 )
Q: I underwent a surgical operation at the beginning of the noble month of Ramadan, and I did not fast the month of Ramadan because the doctors advised me not to fast. I have fed a poor person for each day with a mudd of barley. I asked the scholars, and some said: feeding is valid, while others said: fasting is obligatory. I hope you will advise me – two years have passed since this fast and I have not fasted it : 1 - Is it obligatory for me to fast it, or is it valid? 2 - If it is not valid, is it permissible to fast it before the coming month of Ramadan?
A: It is obligatory for you to make up the number of days you did not fast from the month of Ramadan when the operation was performed. Allah the Exalted said:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysوَمَنْ كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]

It is also obligatory for you to feed a poor person for each day for delaying the making up of the fast until after the other Ramadan. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
