Fatwa No. ( 16141 )
Q: I am a woman who believes in Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and I praise and thank Him for that. I fast the month of Ramadan, and a legal excuse that Allah has permitted for women may occur, after which the fasts must be made up. However, in one of the years, Ramadan coincided with my post-natal bleeding, and I intended in my heart to make up the fasts after the post-natal period ended – once ritual purity became obligatory – but I was unable to do so because I was breastfeeding . Also, the area where I live is very hot, and I have domestic duties that I must perform. As for breastfeeding, there are several helpers available. The second matter is that after four months had passed since the post-natal period, Allah blessed me and I became pregnant, so my fear of fasting increased. Is it obligatory for me to feed people in this case, or to make up the fasts? If feeding is obligatory, please clarify the description of the feeding?
A: It is obligatory for this woman to make up the fasts. She must make up the number of days she missed in Ramadan due to post-natal bleeding, and feed one poor person for each day to compensate for her delaying the making up until the second Ramadan. The amount of food for each poor person is one and a half kilograms of rice, wheat, or similar staple food of the country. She should seek forgiveness from Allah for her negligence in delaying, and there is no harm in her giving the food all at once before, after, or during the making up of the fasts. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
