The Ruling on Making Up Fasts Consecutively and Delaying Them Until the Next Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our sister asks about making up the fasts of Ramadan that a woman missed due to post-natal bleeding or menstruation. Is it permissible for her to make them up one day after another? And if she delays them until another Ramadan arrives, what is the ruling? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is obligatory for her to make up the fasts, whether consecutively or separately; there is no harm in that. This is because Allah says:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysوَمَنْ كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[al-Baqarah: 185]. Likewise, the woman with post-natal bleeding and the menstruating woman must make up the fasts, but there is no harm in separating them; she may fast one day and break the fast the next, and there is no blame on her. However, it is not permissible to delay them until Ramadan; rather, she must hasten to make them up before Ramadan. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. If a woman delays them until another Ramadan arrives and then makes them up, what is upon her, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh: If she delays them, she must repent, she must make up the fasts, and she must feed a poor person for each day. That is three additional things:
She must repent to Allah and feel remorse, she must make up the fasts, and she must feed a poor person for each day, if the delay was without an excuse, provided she had the ability and there was no obstacle for her, no illness preventing her, and no excuse, but she delayed out of negligence. In that case, she must make up the fasts, repent, and feed a poor person for each day. The text specifies half a sa' for each day, which is gathered and given to some poor people according to the number of days... Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. How many kilograms does half a sa' equal, if you please?

The Shaykh: One and a half kilograms.

The presenter: One and a half kilograms?

The Shaykh: Yes.

The presenter: Yes, so she gives one and a half kilograms to one of the poor people for each day she delayed without an excuse?

The Shaykh: Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
