The Nullifiers of Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q281: The questioner asks: What are the nullifiers of Islam?
A281: The nullifiers of Islam are numerous and very serious, so it is obligatory for the Muslim to know them and learn them in order to avoid them and guard against them. No one is safe from them regarding himself. This is Ibrahim al-Khalil (peace be upon him), who said, as Allah the Exalted mentioned:
(35) And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. (36) My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me - then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.
[Ibrahim 14:35-36]
. So a person is not safe regarding himself; rather, he fears and guards against them and asks Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) for steadfastness. And this is the Prophet of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who frequently used to say:
O changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3587Hasan (Darussalam)

It is obligatory for the Muslim to guard against that and to ask Allah for steadfastness and a good ending. This is the obligation of the Muslim after knowing what nullifies Islam and invalidates it, and avoiding it and guarding against it. Especially since you know the strangeness of the religion in this time, the abundance of trials, and the abundance of callers to misguidance. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There will be callers at the gates of Hell; whoever responds to them they throw them into it.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3979Sahih (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do good deeds before trials come like portions of a dark night when a man will be a believer in the morning and an infidel in the evening, and a believer in the evening and an infidel in the morning, selling his religion for some worldly goodsبادروا بالأعمال فتناً كقطع الليل المظلم، يصبح الرجل مؤمناً ويمسي كافراً، ويمسي مؤمناً ويصبح كافراً، يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا
Mishkat al-Masabih 5383
So it is obligatory for the person to hold fast to his religion no matter what it costs him, and no matter what trials and tests he faces. For as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us:
There shall come upon the people a time in which the one who is patient upon his religion will be like the one holding onto a burning ember.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2260Hasan (Darussalam)
And that is due to the severity of
what he faces of hardship, callers to misguidance, and the strangeness of the religion. So the Muslim must hold fast to his religion no matter what it costs him. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
. The nullifiers of Islam are numerous; the scholars mentioned them in the chapter on the ruling of the apostate in the books of Islamic jurisprudence. The Shaykh and Imam Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him) summarized ten of them, the most important of which are: 1- Associating partners with Allah (Mighty and Majestic); such as calling upon other than Allah, or slaughtering for other than Allah, or making a vow for other than Allah. 2- Among them is sorcery; for it is disbelief to learn it and to teach it. 3- Among them is ruling by other than what Allah has revealed. Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:44]
. So if a person resorts to a method that circumvents the ruling of Allah, and prefers other than it over it, thinking that it is better, or that it is equal to the ruling of Allah, or that he has a choice; then he becomes a disbeliever
in Allah with major shirk, refuge with Allah. 4- Among them is claiming knowledge of the unseen. Those who claim knowledge of the unseen, such as fortune-tellers, astrologers, palm readers, and the like, who inform about the future; this is disbelief in Allah; for the unseen is not known except by Allah, as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."
[An-Naml 27:65]
. And no one claims knowledge of the unseen except an apostate, a fortune-teller, or a disbeliever. The remaining nullifiers are known and one should refer to them, but the Muslim must guard against them with the utmost caution.
