The Ruling on Vowing to Travel to the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Mosque
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q204: The questioner says: My mother made a vow to visit the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Mosque and to pray in it for seven days and their nights. Is it permissible for her to fulfill this vow in the Sacred Mosque in Mecca instead of the Prophet’s Mosque?
A204: The Noble Prophet’s Mosque has a special virtue, and it is one of the three mosques to which it is permissible to travel for prayer and worship. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 1189
Whoever vows to travel to the Noble Prophet’s Mosque to pray in it and worship there, this is a vow of obedience, and it is obligatory to fulfill it. The questioner, or questioner, says that she vowed to pray in the Prophet’s Mosque. Can she deviate from that and pray in the Sacred Mosque? What is appropriate is that she proceed with her vow and pray in the Sacred Mosque for the number of days she vowed, fulfilling what she vowed, and that she fulfill it in the Sacred Mosque. I see no impediment to that, because the Sacred Mosque is better than the Prophet’s Mosque. And whoever intends one of these three mosques with a vow and performs it in one that is better than it, there is no impediment to that. This is based on the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), after a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to him: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to pray in the Sacred Mosque instead of the
Farthest Mosque; because the Sacred Mosque is better than the Farthest Mosque. So based on this: the one who vowed to pray in the Prophet’s Mosque may pray in the Sacred Mosque; because it is better than the Prophet’s Mosque. And Allah the Exalted knows best. And her saying seven days with their nights, does its meaning imply that she prays only the regular voluntary prayers, or that she prays for a period of seven days with their nights? If her intention is the obligatory prayers, and that she remains in the Prophet’s Mosque for seven days and their nights praying; then this means i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque). If she is able to do this and can manage it; then it is obligatory upon her.
