The questioner : You say: I heard from some people that it is obligatory to trim the nails after forty nights, so we ask your eminence to cite the text, whether from the Book or the Sunnah, that supports this claim, and is the intention the nails of the hands and feet, or only the nails of the hands?

The Shaykh : The hadith is from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) set a time limit for us regarding the mustache, the armpits, the pubic hair, and the nails, that they should not be left for more than forty days, or he said: nights. وقت لنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الشارب والإبط والعانة والأظفار ألا تترك فوق أربعين يوماً أو قال : ليلة
.
The issue is not specific to the nails; rather, it concerns the nails, the armpits, the pubic hair, and the mustache; do not leave any of them for more than forty days.
It is an error for some women, in particular, to let their nails grow long, and for some of them to trim their nails except for the nail of one finger, which they leave until it is like the tip of a spear. All of this is due to ignorance. Otherwise, I think that if a Muslim knows the ruling of Allah and His Messenger, he will not deviate from it. The important thing is not to leave these four things for more than forty days.
