The questioner : He has a final question in which he asks about the ruling on hanging amulets on parts of the body, especially those amulets that contain Qur'anic verses or hadiths?

The Shaykh : This issue, which I mean hanging amulets or talismans, is divided into two categories. One is that what is hung is from the Qur'an, and the second is that it is from other than the Qur'an, something whose meaning is not known.
As for the first, which is hanging them from the Qur'an, the scholars of knowledge, both the Salaf and the Khalaf, have differed on this. Some of them permitted it and considered it to fall under the saying of Allah the Exalted:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ
[Sad 38:29]
and that one of its blessings is that it is hung to ward off evil. Others prohibited this and said that hanging them has not been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a legitimate cause by which evil is averted or removed. The original principle in such matters is to wait for a definitive ruling, and this is the stronger position: that it is not permissible to hang talismans, even if they are from the Qur'an. It is also not permissible to place them under the pillow of a sick person, or to hang them on the wall, or the like. Rather, one should make du'a for the sick person and recite to him directly, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. As for when what is hung is from other than the Qur'an, which is the second category, something whose meaning is not known, it is not permissible in any case, because it is not known what is written. Some people write cryptic symbols and complex things with interwoven letters that you can barely recognize or read. This is a religious innovation and is forbidden; it is not permissible in any case.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The questioner : This questioner is Abdullah Ahmad from Iraq, Baghdad, al-Mada'in.
