The questioner : The second question: A man is married and has two children, and he owns no property, neither a house nor real estate. He lives in a room that belongs to his father, and he has a monthly salary from the government as compensation for his job. This monthly wage does not exceed what is needed to cover his very basic necessities. Is zakah obligatory on him, and what is its percentage of the salary?

The Shaykh : There is no zakah on the salary, and there is no zakah on anything other than the salary either, until a lunar year has passed. If a person spends it before the completion of the lunar year, then there is no zakah on it. However, the profit from trade does not require a lunar year. If a person buys goods for trade for ten thousand, and their value rises to fifteen thousand at the completion of the lunar year, he pays zakah on fifteen thousand, even if the five thousand profit was only realized at the end of the year, because the profit from trade follows the original capital regarding the lunar year. And when zakah becomes obligatory on money, the obligatory amount is one-quarter of one-tenth, meaning one-fortieth.

The questioner : This is a message from the listener Ali Maghribi from the Arab Republic of Egypt. He sent several questions.
