Q: Your Eminence, I love you for the sake of Allah, and I have a question: I am a resident of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah , and I want to visit some of my relatives in the city of Yanbu' , which is about 250 km west of al-Madinah, and I will stay with them for a few days, and then go to al-Makkah al-Mukarramah for 'Umrah. So, is it obligatory for me to enter the state of ihram from the miqat of the people of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah , or do I enter the state of ihram from the miqat of the people of Yanbu'
( al-Juhfah), and ifit is obligatory for me to enter the state of ihram from the miqat ofthe people of Madinahwhat is obligatory for me if I entered the state of ihram from the miqat ofthe people of Yanbu? May Allah reward you with the best reward for us and for the Muslim community

A : If you leave al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah intending to perform 'Umrah, it is obligatory for you to enter the state of ihram from its miqat, Dhu al-Hulayfah , which is now called ( Abiyar 'Ali ). It is not permissible for you to pass it without entering the state of ihram, even if you intend to visit your relatives in the city of Yanbu' . You should visit them while in the state of ihram, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specified the miqats, he said:
and those (Mawaqit) are also meant for those who live at these (places) and for those too who come from without towards them for the sake of Hajj or 'Umraهن لهن ولمن أتى عليهن من غير أهلهن ممن أراد الحج والعمرة
Sahih Muslim 1181a
. So, if you pass the miqat without entering the state of ihram while intending to perform a ritual, it becomes forbidden for you, and you must pay the expiation, which is: slaughtering a sheep in al-Makkah that is acceptable as a sacrificial animal, and distributing it among the poor of al-Haram . If you are unable to slaughter the expiation, you must fast for ten days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
