Q: We had a sum of money equal to (11,000) eleven thousand pounds, and my father passed away after a year had passed over it. He had been ill for the last three months of that year. Is it permissible to pay the zakah on this amount ,
and is he accountable for it and obligated to pay it before Allah?
A: If the situation is as described, and the money had been in his possession for a full lunar year while your father was still alive, then the zakah is obligatory on it. It should be paid on his behalf after his death. The fact that he was afflicted with illness in the last year does not exempt him from the obligation of zakah on his wealth. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
