Giving Zakah to a Project for Marrying Off Young Men

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20662 )
Q: I wish to pay the zakah of my wealth. I have heard about a charitable project that helps young Muslims get married. It provides assistance to needy young men to help them marry, either by giving them financial aid or by lending them amounts that they repay to the office in monthly installments. Is it permissible to give zakah and voluntary charity to this project if it operates in this manner?
A : It is obligatory to pay zakah to its rightful recipients immediately when it becomes due. It is not permissible to delay it beyond that time except for a valid religious excuse. Paying it to associations delays its payment past its due time, and some associations may dispose of it in a manner that contradicts the prescribed religious purpose. Therefore, it is obligatory for the one paying zakah to pay it out himself or through a trustee in whom he has confidence. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
