Q: A group of people has appeared in our town who say: "We follow the Prophet, and we break our fast in Ramadan or otherwise as soon as the sun's disk disappears." They say that the hadith they cite as evidence is authentic. What do you say about this, O Shaykh?
A: Allah the Exalted said:
Then complete the fast until the sunsetثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun sets, then the fasting person should break his fast.إذا أقبل الليل من هاهنا وأدبر النهار من هاهنا وغربت الشمس فقد أفطر الصائم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1954
, narrated by al-Bukhari . Therefore, it is not permissible for the fasting person to break his fast unless he is certain that the sun has set in the western horizon and that night is approaching from the eastern horizon. This is either by seeing it or by hearing the mu'adhdhin who calls to prayer at the correct time. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
