Breaking the fast before the setting of the sun

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 3473 )
Q: A man traveled in Ramadan from al-Dhahran to Britain and arrived in the city of Brimth , which is a city 200 km from London , and there were no Muslims in it. The man in question continued his fast after arriving in that city. He asked about the time difference and was told it was two hours, so he added half an hour as a precaution. Since he arrived on days when there were many clouds, and he was unable to determine the time of sunset due to the heavy clouds in the sky, he asked some of the residents of the area where he would live about the time of sunset, and they gave him an answer that was later found to be incorrect. This was after five days had passed, when the sky cleared of clouds and it was confirmed that he had broken his fast an hour and a half before the time. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good, whether this man has to make up the fasts or not? He exerted effort in determining the time of breaking the fast, used the clock for that, asked about the time difference, and asked people who answered him in the affirmative, though they were lying to him. The sky was covered with clouds from his arrival until the clouds cleared after five days. Does he have to make them up or not?
A: When it becomes clear to the fasting person that he broke his fast before the setting of the sun, he must make it up; because his breaking of the fast occurred at a time when it was not permissible, and because the original state is the continuation of the day, and one does not depart from this original state except by a Shari'ah-based evidence, which here is
the setting of the sun. The scholars have unanimously agreed that fasting is from the appearance of the dawn until the setting of the sun; because Allah the Exalted said:
And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset.
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
And since it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun sets, then the fasting person should break his fast.إذا أقبل الليل من ها هنا وأدبر النهار من ها هنا وغربت الشمس فقد أفطر الصائم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1954
Therefore, this person must make up the five days in which it became clear to him that he had broken his fast before the setting of the sun, and there is no sin on him; because he did not intentionally break his fast during the day of Ramadan, and his breaking of the fast was due to ignorance and mistake. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
