Making up fasts left without excuse

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20064 )
Q: It isa man who, for a period of time approaching ten years, has been fasting Ramadan, but has broken his fast on some days of Ramadan without an excuse, and recently, within the past few years, he repented to Allah. What is required of him regarding the years in which he was breaking his fast? Knowing that he did not make up those days, nor did he determine those times, and he regrets what has passed, what is obligatory upon him?
A: It is obligatory for this person to investigate the days of Ramadan he broke in the past years and fast the amount that he believes, based on his preponderant opinion, that he broke. There is no harm in fasting them separately. Additionally, for every day he delayed making up until another Ramadan arrived without making it up without excuse, he must feed one poor person the amount of half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, rice, or similar staple food of the people of the country. If he engaged in sexual intercourse during the day in Ramadan on the days he broke his fast without excuse, he is required to pay the expiation for intercourse for every day of Ramadan in which intercourse occurred. This is: freeing a believing slave. If he does not find one or cannot afford its price, he must fast two consecutive months, sixty days. If he cannot do that, he must feed sixty poor people, each poor person receiving
half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, rice, or similar staple food of the people of the country. He must also make sincere repentance and not return to such a bad action. Indeed, whoever breaks the fast in Ramadan without excuse has committed a great sin and a major transgression that warrants the anger and punishment of Allah, because he considered the sanctity of Ramadan permissible to violate and was negligent regarding a pillar of Islam. It is prescribed for him to increase in seeking forgiveness, voluntary acts of worship, and supplication before Allah, so that perhaps Allah will pardon him, forgive him for what has passed, and replace his bad deeds with good ones. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
