Is zakah permissible for my widowed mother?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20864 )
Q: My mother is a widow, and her husband passed away some time ago. One day last year, in 1419 AH, some of the brothers gave her a sum of four hundred riyals (400) and informed her that it was from zakah. She accepted it
and engaged in it on a public road; because she considers that she is not among the categories of zakah recipients, and although she is not well-off at all, she does not want to open the door for herself to take zakah. She is now asking: What is the ruling on her action? Is her obligation and the obligation of the one who distributed the zakah cleared, or is she required to return the full amount to the people of zakah?
A: If your mother does not fall into the categories in which zakah is distributed, it is not permissible for her to take it, nor to dispose of it. Therefore, what she did, as mentioned in the question, is incorrect, and she must return the amount to its owner so that he may distribute it to its rightful recipient. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
