I named one of my daughters Nowruz
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 15851 )
Q: I inform your Eminence that I named one of my daughters (Nowruz) while unaware that this name belongs to one of the festivals of the Persians . All I knew was that the word (Nowruz) means (spring) in Persian. Now I seek a fatwa from your Eminence on this matter, and whether I am obligated to change my daughter’s name to another, especially since I have registered it in official documents three years ago.
A: It is obligatory for the father of a child, whether male or female, to choose a good name for him and avoid an ugly name. Since the questioner stated that he named his daughter (Nowruz), which is the name of a Persian festival, it is obligatory to change this name to a good one, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed the names of some of his Companions. As for the registration of the previous name in official documents, this is not a barrier to changing it according to the prevailing regulations. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
