Naming the Shop with This Name: Nowruz

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 21718 )
Q: I established a factory for selling sweets and named it "Nowruz," relying on some dictionaries and linguistic books that clarified that Nowruz is an Arabicized Persian word meaning "new day." The word has two parts: "ni" means new, and "ruz" means day. It is sometimes pronounced "Noruz." However, some of my brother scholars strongly objected to the name, saying that it is not permissible and that I must change it, because Nowruz is a festival of the Persians . Meanwhile, it is clear in some of the linguistic sources, some of which are attached to this
inquiry, that Nowruz is the first day of the Iranian year, meaning "new day." I intended the purely linguistic meaning. You know, O honorable Shaykh, that the Jews celebrate the Sabbath, and we have not denied the word "Sabbath" in its linguistic meaning; indeed, some of the Muslims' festivals fall on the day of the Sabbath. I ask you to inform me and guide me on this matter: should I keep the shop's sign and its name "Nowruz," or is that not permissible? May Allah reward you with good, and may He make your knowledge beneficial to Islam and the Muslims.

A : It is not permissible to name the shop with this name (Nowruz), because it is the name of the Persians' festival, and Muslims are prohibited from imitating the disbelievers and the non-Arabs. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
