The obligatory amount for sixty sheep from the flock

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 18806 )
Q1: I have a nisab of sheep or more, approximately sixty head. As the lunar year of possession was approaching, I designated a male goat for them to be their zakah. One day, one of the brothers came and asked me to sell him that male goat, so I sold it to him for 400 riyals. No one knew that I had designated it as zakah. Then I distributed the value of the male goat among four poor families. Does distributing the value suffice for me, or is it better to give a head of sheep? I ask for a detailed explanation of this issue. May Allah guide you.
A1: The obligatory amount for sixty sheep from the flock is one sheep from among them, from the middle category, if they are grazing freely, which is the type that grazes for most of the lunar year, and the intention is that they are kept for milk and offspring. If these sheep are a mix of sheep and goats, then one is taken from either type from the middle category. If one gives
the best and most valuable, that is better, and it is not permissible to give from the defective; because zakah must be from the middle category. As for your giving the value of the male goat, if the male goat was equal to the amount obligatory upon you, there is no harm, otherwise give what remains. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
