Fatwa number ( 18902 )
Q: The imam stood up in the Maghrib prayer, and during the recitation he forgot two verses from the opening chapter while in prayer , knowing that the followers were certain of this and did not recite behind the imam until the prayer ended. After the imam said the closing salam, they told him: “You forgot two verses from the opening chapter.” He acknowledged it, saying he felt that the opening chapter ended quickly, but he said, “If I had made a mistake, someone behind me would have reminded me.” What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this prayer?
A: If the situation is as described, you must all repeat the prayer; because the prayer is not valid except with the recitation of the entire opening chapter, and that did not occur. It was obligatory for this imam, upon realizing that he had left out some verses from the opening chapter, to stand up immediately, perform a rak'ah, and recite the final tashahhud
and prostrate for forgetfulness and say the closing salam. As long as he did not do that and a long time has passed, it is obligatory for you all to repeat the entire prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
