Fatwa number ( 16545 )
Q: When a person sleeps and then gets up in the morning and finds himself in a state of janabah, what does he do? And before he performs ghusl for janabah, does he put on pure clothes and then perform ghusl? Is it permissible for him to wear those clothes, and why?
A : If a person wakes up and finds that he has had a wet dream, meaning that semen came out of him in his sleep, then it is obligatory for him to perform the ghusl of janabah. It is permissible for him to wear pure clothes before performing ghusl, because janabah is not impurity (najasah), but rather a spiritual state of ritual impurity (hadath). Semen is pure and not impure. However, it is recommended to wash it from the garment if it is wet, or to rub it if it is dry, as it is established from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to wash it from the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) if it was wet, and rub it if it was dry. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
