Repeating the funeral prayer for the deceased in more than one place
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q17: In Indonesia, some people, when one of their relatives dies, pray over him in his village. Before burying him, they take him to another village where one of his relatives lives and pray over him again. What is the ruling on this?
Answer: There is no harm in repeating the funeral prayer for the deceased for those who have not prayed over him, just as if a group prayed over him and then another group arrived, they may pray over him in congregation or individually, in the mosque or in the cemetery. This is based on what is established:Mishkat al-Masabih 1659. It was narrated by Muslim. As for moving the deceased from one town to another, if the intention behind moving the deceased is to choose to bury him in another town because his family is there or for a similar reason, then there is no harm in repeating the funeral prayer over him, especially for those who did not attend the prayer over him the first time. However, if the intention behind the move is to repeat the prayer over him in different towns, this contradicts the guidance of the righteous Salaf and contradicts the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to hasten with the burial of the deceased, as in the hadith of
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 1315. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

a negress (or a youth) used to sweep the mosque. God’s messenger missed her, and when he asked about her (or him) the people told him he had died. He asked why they had not informed him, and it appeared as if they had treated her (or him) as of little account. He asked the people to lead him to the grave, and when they did so he prayed over her (The wording of this tradition causes some difficulty owing to the indefiniteness as to whether the person was a man or a woman. Sometimes the alternative is mentioned, as in the translation, but sometimes merely the masculine singular pronoun and at others merely the feminine singular pronoun is used) and then said, "These graves are full of darkness for their occupants, but God will illuminate them for them by reason of my prayer over them.”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Hurry up with the dead body for if it was righteous, you are forwarding it to welfare; and if it was otherwise, then you are putting off an evil thing down your necks.
أسرعوا بالجنازة فإن تك صالحة فخير تقدمونها وإن يك سوى ذلك فشر تضعونه عن رقابكم
