Q: What is the Islamic ruling on delaying the 'Asr prayer until just before the time for the Maghrib prayer begins, because they are tied up with some patients and the college does not allow them to leave until the patient's treatment is finished and the consultant gives permission?
A: The specialist doctor performing operations must take into account the timing of the operations so that the performance of the prayer in its proper time is not missed. It is permissible in case of dire necessity to combine the two prayers, either by bringing the later one forward or delaying the earlier one; such as combining Zuhr with 'Asr, and Maghrib with 'Isha', according to what the dire necessity requires. However, if the prayer is not combined with the one following it, such as 'Asr and Fajr, then if it is possible to perform it in its proper time, even if this is done by having some of the workers take turns, and then the others pray after them, that is good. And if it is not possible, there is no blame in delaying the prayer and making it up after the operation ends, due to dire necessity, and it is measured by its extent. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
