Placing urinals in the sacred sites where one urinates while standing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q : (The Al-Hidayah Association for Pilgrims and Visitors) is a charitable organization specialized in serving and educating pilgrims and visitors. Its board of directors is chaired by His Excellency Shaykh Salih ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Husayn , the General President of the Affairs of al-Masjid al-Haram , and al-Masjid al-Nabawi . Among the association's activities, and as part of its program to alleviate distress, is the installation of special urinals for men in crowded areas of Makkah al-Mukarramah and the sacred sites. These are the well-known urinals found in airports and public places, but we have modified them according to Sharia guidelines by adding
large side screens and a rear curtain so that no one inside can be seen. The basin was also designed to prevent the splashing of urine, and a water tap was added for istinja' (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself). This was done to provide relief for the elderly, diabetic patients, and others. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated while standing. By the grace of Allah, the idea was a great success, and the Ministry of Water adopted it, implementing more than one thousand urinals in the sacred sites. A number of them were also installed in the new restrooms near the Haram. Since some of the general public may object to the issue of urinating while standing, and may be harsh with those who do so, and may even demand the removal of these urinals, we hope that you will clarify the Sharia ruling on this matter. May Allah preserve you.

A : It is recommended (mustahabb) for a man to urinate while sitting, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Imam Ahmad , al-Nasa'i , al-Tirmidhi , Ibn Majah , Abu Awana , and al-Hakim narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) urinated standing up, do not believe him, for he would not urinate except while squatting.من حدثكم أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - بال قائمًا فلا تصدقوه ما كان يبول إلا جالسًا
Sunan an-Nasa'i 29Hasan (Darussalam)
. And al-Tirmidhi said: This is the best and most authentic narration in this chapter. However, if there is a need for him to urinate while standing because he is in a place where he cannot sit, it is permissible for him to do so, based on what was narrated by Ahmad , al-Bukhari , Muslim , and the authors of
the Sunan, from Hudhayfa (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came upon a latrine of a group of people and urinated while standing.أن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - انتهى إلى سباطة قوم فبال قائمًا
. Therefore, there is no harm in installing the urinals mentioned in the question for the sake of necessity, in the manner described in the question. And for what you have done, we hope that you will receive reward from Allah for the kindness shown to people.
