The hadith: “Indeed, charity extinguishes the anger of the Lord”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18860 )
Q1: I heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). What is the meaning of the hadith: “
Sadaqa appeases the Lord’s anger and averts an evil death.إن الصدقة لتطفئ غضب الرب وتدفع ميتة السوء
Mishkat al-Masabih 1909
.”
Who narrated the hadith, and is it authentic or not? Please explain the hadith, and what is meant by his saying:
a bad deathميتة السوء
? Can a person who is negligent in prayer and dies be included in this, or is his sin greater than that?

A1: Sincere charity for the sake of Allah causes Allah to be pleased with the servant, for pleasure is the opposite of anger. Thus, charity extinguishes the anger of the Lord
just as water extinguishes fire. The meaning of “a bad death” is that the death occurs in the path of disobedience to Allah, and may Allah protect us from that; for a bad death is a type of punishment and anger from Allah. Accordingly, if a person who is negligent in prayer dies without repenting from his sin, he falls under that warning. As for one who abandons prayer, he thereby becomes a disbeliever with major shirk (associating partners with Allah) according to the most correct of the scholars’ opinions; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
, narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih), and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
, narrated by Imam Ahmad , Abu Dawud , al-Tirmidhi , al-Nasa'i , and Ibn Majah with a sound chain. Therefore, charity, along with performing the obligatory duties, avoiding what is forbidden, and being from good and pure wealth for the sake of Allah, wards off a bad death for a person by Allah’s guidance to the paths of good and His assistance in His obedience, until he meets Allah while He is pleased with him, by the permission of Allah the Exalted; for charity raises affliction by expiating the sins that cause anger and bring about punishment and retribution. The hadith was narrated by al-Tirmidhi in (al-Jami' al-Sahih, Vol. 3, p. 52, No. 664) in the chapter on zakah (the obligatory alms) with the wording:
Sadaqa appeases the Lord’s anger and averts an evil death.إن الصدقة لتطفئ غضب الرب وتدفع ميتة السوء
Mishkat al-Masabih 1909
. And al-Tirmidhi said: “It is a good, strange hadith from this direction.”
It was also narrated by Ibn Hibban in (his Sahih, Vol. 8, p. 104, No. 3309). It was narrated by al-Tabarani in (al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, under Nos. 8014, 1018), and he said: “Its chain is good.” He also narrated it in (al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, Nos. 943, 3450). He also narrated it in (al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, Vol. 1, p. 255), and al-Baghawi included it in (Sharh al-Sunnah, Vol. 5, p. 133, No. 1634). And al-Haythami included it in (Majma' al-Zawa'id, Vol. 3, p. 115), and he said: “Its chain is good.” And al-Mundhiri included it in (al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, Vol. 2, p. 31) from the route of Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah , and he said regarding it: Sadaqah ibn 'Abd Allah al-Samin is acceptable in corroborating narrations. It was also narrated by al-Hakim in (his Mustadrak) and by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in (Qada' al-Hawa'ij). Thus, the hadith is narrated through multiple routes with the aforementioned wording, both in full and in abbreviated form, from 'Abd Allah ibn Ja'far , Abu Sa'id al-Khudri , 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas , 'Umar ibn al-Khattab , 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud , Abu Umamah , Anas ibn Malik , and Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah . These are routes that are not free from weakness, as mentioned by the masters of hadith, but the hadith has corroborating narrations that strengthen it, and the multiplicity of its routes makes it no less than the rank of hasan li-ghayrihi (good due to external support). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
