The Verse and What He Compelled Us To of Sorcery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18470 )
Q: What is the meaning of the statement of the magicians of Pharaoh after they believed, as He, the Exalted, said about them:
what you compelled us [to do] of magicوَمَا أَكْرَهْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ السِّحْرِ
[Taha 20:73]
?

A: The apparent meaning of the statement of Allah, the Exalted:
what you compelled us [to do] of magicوَمَا أَكْرَهْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ السِّحْرِ
[Taha 20:73]
is that Pharaoh compelled the magicians to practice sorcery, but other verses came indicating that they did it willingly, not under compulsion, such as His, the Exalted, saying:
they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?" (42) He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:41-42]
and other verses. So the scholars adopted three paths to reconcile this: The first is that the intended meaning of compulsion is that he compelled them to be present from their places to oppose Moses with their sorcery, so when they were compelled to come and then ordered to practice sorcery, they did so willingly. Thus, their compulsion was regarding the initial matter, and their willingness was regarding the final matter, and by this the meaning of the verses becomes clear and the apparent contradiction is removed.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
