Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 15609 )
Q: Allah the Exalted said:
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is askedوَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ
[At-Takwir 81:8]
What is wa'd (infanticide) linguistically and in the Shari'ah, and when is wa'd considered wa'd?
May Allah reward you with good.

A: Al-Wa'd: burying a girl alive, and what is meant by it in the verse is what the people of
the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to do, which was burying a girl alive in the earth out of aversion to daughters. On the Day of Resurrection, the buried girl will be asked for what sin she was killed; this serves as a threat to her killer, for if the wronged one is asked, what then of the wrongdoer? The verse was also recited as: (And when the buried girl is asked), meaning: she demands her blood. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
