Fatwa No. ( 12317 )
Q: Some people, when the time for the wedding arrives, bring a man or a woman for the groom and the bride. One of them fills a container with eggs and then breaks them, either on the head of the groom or the bride. Then they lift a plate from above the head of the groom or the bride. Then the families of the bride and groom come to congratulate them on their wedding and throw money into this plate. This person holds the money and then says: "This is 500 from so-and-so, son of so-and-so." This is what they do, and they earn from it approximately ten thousand in every wedding. If you ask these people why they do this and bring these two individuals to deceive you and take a huge amount from you, they answer you: "These are the traditions of our fathers and our earliest ancestors." Or they bring a ram and make the groom or the bride pass over this animal, which they lay on the ground, believing that this brings blessing to this wedding. What is the ruling on bringing these two individuals to this occasion? What is the ruling on one who claims that this is from the Sunnah and that this is true? What is the ruling on breaking the eggs or slaughtering the ram?
Is this amount paid to these two individuals lawful or forbidden? What do you advise this family, who believe that this is from the traditions of their fathers, and what must they do after the truth reaches them, and what is the expiation for that?

A: 1- Breaking eggs on the head of the groom or the bride at a wedding ceremony is not from the Sunnah; rather, it is one of the old, detestable customs by which swindlers consume people's wealth unjustly. Therefore, it is not permissible to bring such a person to a wedding ceremony. The same applies to the bride and groom passing over the ram at a wedding ceremony. 2- It is not permissible to pay money to the one who breaks the aforementioned egg at a wedding ceremony. 3- It is obligatory for the one who did this to repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from what occurs and to seek His forgiveness, and to beware of returning to it a second time. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
