Hoping for Death

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 18060 )
Q 2: My mother fell seriously ill and was in a coma in the hospital. When she regained consciousness, she found that she could not move, as she had suffered a hemiplegic stroke. She wept bitterly and said, “O Lord, I do not want to live in this condition,” and she asked her Lord for death. After a day, she returned home and passed away the following morning. Is there a sin on my mother for what she said, namely that she asked her Lord for death? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A 2: Hoping for death is not permissible, except if a person fears fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) in his religion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you should make a request for death because of the trouble in which he is involved, but if there is no other help to it, then say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as there is goodness in life for me and bring death to me when there is goodness in death for me.لا يتمنين أحدكم الموت لضر نزل به، وإن كان لا بد فاعلاً فليقل: اللهم أحيني ما دامت الحياة خيرًا لي، وتوفني إذا كانت الوفاة خيرًا لي
Sahih Muslim 2680a
, and there are hadiths reported on this matter. What your mother did is not permissible, but perhaps she is excused due to ignorance. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
