Fatwa No. ( 16437 )
Q: I work in one of the government offices, and my direct supervisor is a Christian. The custom is that when I speak with someone, the response is (May Allah bless you), (May Allah honor you), (May Allah protect you). What is the opinion of the religion regarding this? And is this contrary to the saying of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, in Surat al-Tawbah:[At-Tawbah 9:113] ?
A: It is not permissible to make the aforementioned supplication for a disbeliever; rather, one should supplicate for him for guidance to Islam. If he does a good deed, one should express good feelings toward him in a manner befitting the occasion, such as saying, "I am grateful," or the like. As for the noble verse, it is regarding those who die upon disbelief. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
A: It is not permissible to make the aforementioned supplication for a disbeliever; rather, one should supplicate for him for guidance to Islam.
