Fulfilling a vow immediately, or is it permissible to delay it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19982 )
Q: Is it obligatory for a Muslim to fulfill a vow of fasting or otherwise in the same year in which he made it, or does he have the right to postpone it to another year?
A: It is obligatory for one who vows to fast within a specified period to fast in that period; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Himمن نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6696
. This is a vow of obedience within a specified period, and it is not permissible to delay it beyond that period except for a valid religious excuse. However, if the vow is absolute and not specified by a particular time—and it is a vow of obedience—then he must hasten to fulfill it; based on the aforementioned hadith. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
