Q: We have a board of activities at our school for students who excel academically. This board includes the student's name and, in front of it, his 4x6 photograph. The purpose of this board is to encourage students to be diligent and strive hard, and to foster
competition among them in terms of academic achievement. Therefore, we hope you will kindly grant us a fatwa regarding the Islamic ruling on the permissibility of placing photographs or not. May Allah guide us and you to what is good in this world and the Hereafter.
A: It is not permissible to place students' photographs on the activity board, nor to keep the photograph; because of the established evidence from the Shari'ah that prohibits image-making. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
