Fatwa No. ( 16259 )
Q1: I was given a camera as a gift, and I filmed an entire roll of film, but I heard that photographers are the most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection. What should I do? Should I burn these pictures? And what is required of me if I take pictures of nature, meaning ones that contain no humans?
A1: Photography, also called optical photography, is forbidden and not permissible when it depicts a human or animal with a soul. You must destroy what you have photographed of those with souls. As for photographing things without a soul, such as trees and the like, there is nothing wrong with it.
