Fatwa No. ( 16827 )
Q: Please inform us about how to feed the ten poor people required in the expiation for an oath . Is it for a full day or one meal for each person, and what is its value? Is it permissible to pay its value in cash or not?
A: The expiation for an oath is: feeding ten poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, dates, rice, or the like of the country's staple food, and the amount of half a sa' is one and a half kilograms, or clothing ten poor people, giving each poor person a shirt, or freeing a believing slave. If one is unable to do any of these three mentioned things, he fasts for three days. It is not permissible to pay the value in cash for the expiation of an oath. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
