How to Pay the Expiation for an Oath

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 5519 )
Q 1: What is the method of paying the expiation for an oath, and is it permissible to pay it in the form of uncooked food to a family of ten or five people, for example? An example of an oath expiation is: I pay one and a half mudd of wheat to a family of ten people. Does this suffice for the expiation of the oath, or is it obligatory for me to pay it to each specific person among the ten?
A 1: The expiation for an oath is mentioned by Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in His Noble Book in His saying:
So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:89]
And it suffices you in that to feed ten poor people, or to give them dinner, or to give each of them half a sa' of wheat or rice, or other than that of what is usually eaten
usually, and it is necessary that the ten be covered, whether you fed them all together, or fed or gave to each one individually. The important thing is to ensure their right to it and that the expiation reaches ten poor people. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
