Q: A guest arrived at my place at night, and I slipped up and swore that I would slaughter an animal for him. I broke my oath by saying that I would not slaughter an animal for him. He said to me, "I see you in the face of Allah three times that you will not do this sacrifice for me." I delayed while I was in my place, and I was afraid that I would cut off my face, so I ask you to kindly inform me what is obligatory upon me?
A: If the matter is as you mentioned, then you must expiate an oath, which is: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, or clothing them. If you do not find the means to do so, then you must fast for three days. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:89] the verse. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn
