Fatwa No. ( 5020 )
Q: I have an aunt, my father’s sister, who has vowed to fast every Monday and Thursday of every week as long as she is able to do so, and she was not bedridden. Now, as the blessed month of Ramadan approaches—may Allah return it to us and to you and to the Arab and Islamic Ummah with goodness and blessings—what is the ruling regarding the vow she has made? Please note that she began fasting after last Ramadan in 1401 AH. Does every Monday and Thursday in Ramadan count as making up (qada') what she missed, or what is the ruling in this matter? I ask you to clarify this for me so that I may explain it to her in detail, as she has asked me to seek a fatwa. And Allah supports the servant as long as the servant supports his brother. May Allah protect you.
A: Her fasting on Monday and Thursday in Ramadan is not valid as fulfillment of her vow, and she is not required to make up those days, nor is an expiation (kaffarah) required for them.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
