Q: A man has sons and daughters. One person nursed with the eldest son of this man, and my mother nursed with his middle son, and a third person from a third family nursed with his youngest daughter. What is the relationship between my mother and these two men? Is my mother a sister to all the sons of this man whose wife she nursed from, whether they are his sons from her or from another woman? And if two infants nurse from the breast of one woman at two separate times, which may be ten years apart, is it permissible for each of them to marry the sister of the other if they are brothers through breastfeeding? Since there is no kinship between them other than this breastfeeding.
A: If several people nurse from one woman or from the wives of one man, and each one nurses five times within the first two years, they become brothers through breastfeeding, whether they nursed at close times or distant times. Each one is the maternal uncle of the other’s children through breastfeeding, and they become mahram (forbidden to marry) to one another. It is not permissible for one of them to marry another, and it is permissible for one of them
to marry the sister of the other who did not nurse with them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
