A relative of mine breastfed a young girl using an artificial nipple, not from her own breast, but from her milk which she placed in it, and she breastfed her three times.

The questioner : A female questioner says, "May your excellence...The Shaykh : A relative of mine breastfed a young girl using an artificial nipple, not from her own breast, but from her milk which she placed in it. She breastfed her three times. Does the girl become her daughter through breastfeeding?

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you. Breastfeeding does not establish a prohibition of marriage unless it is five breastfeedings or more. Each breastfeeding must be separate from the others. As for the infant breathing during a single breastfeeding, that is nothing. That is to say, if the infant in the nurse’s lap breathes five times, it is still one breastfeeding. The breastfeedings must be distinct, and the amount must be five. If a woman breastfeeds a child once, it has no effect. Twice? Go ahead. It has no effect. Three, four, five; at that point, he becomes her son through breastfeeding. Even if it is assumed that she breastfed him with the milk of her own son who is three years old. That is to say, she weaned her son and breastfed this child with what remained of the milk. He becomes her son through breastfeeding if the breastfeedings reach five. In the question, how many times did she breastfeed him? Three breastfeedings. So: he is not her son. Now, if he was breastfed five times from a cup. That is to say: the woman put her milk in a cup and breastfed him, and then after a while she breastfed him with another cup until she completed five cups. Does he become her son or not? He becomes her son, whether she satisfied him or not. He becomes her son.
Issue: It has reached me that some husbands take pleasure in their wives by sucking their breasts and drinking their milk. What do you say? Does he become her son through breastfeeding? It is a problem if he becomes her son through breastfeeding. What is the ruling on the marriage? It is annulled. It is over immediately. So this pleasure is followed by misery. For this reason, we warn husbands from this action. What I said is the opinion of Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) and his followers, the Zahiris. They say that breastfeeding has an effect even on an adult. Based on this opinion, we say: if a husband breastfeeds from his wife five times, every morning he breaks his fast with her milk. What happens? He becomes her son according to the opinion of these scholars, and the marriage is annulled. But in any case, the opinion of the majority is that he does not become her son, because the breastfeeding must be before weaning. Yes.
