The first question of Fatwa number ( 1687 )
Q1: A man is the third in rank among his brothers, and he nursed with a daughter from another family. Is this daughter considered a sister to all my brothers, both the young and the old, as well as her brothers from another mother?
A1 : First : The nursing that results in prohibition is what reaches five sucklings or more, and occurs within the first two years; because of the saying of the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:233] , and because it is established from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: It was among what was revealed in the Qur'an: (Ten known sucklings prohibit) then it was abrogated by: (Five known). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter was on that basis. A suckling is: when one sucks the milk from the breast and then leaves it to breathe or move, or the like. If he returns, it is another suckling, and so on. If it is established that the man nursed from the mother of the daughter or from the milk of his father's wife what was mentioned above of nursing - then he becomes a brother to this daughter, and all her brothers and sisters from both parents, or from the mother, or from the father. As for his brothers, it is permissible for any one of them to marry this daughter or any one of
her sisters, and this nursing has no effect on the aforementioned marriage. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
