Q: I am sending you a paper that one of the teachers sent to me. She found it circulating among some of the female students during the exam period. The title of this paper is: (The Supplication for Studying and Success – By the Will of Allah). This paper contains supplications and recitations invented by its author,
taken either from some verses of the Qur'an or Prophetic hadiths, but he assigned them to specific times for recitation for which there is no evidence or report. I am submitting it to you so that I may receive from you a warning or awareness for the people regarding the error of this speech in this form. May Allah make you a support for the truth and its spreaders, and a storehouse for Islam and Muslims. The following appeared in the aforementioned paper: (In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. The Supplication for Studying and Success – By the Will of Allah. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:186] And 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (I do not bear the worry of the answer, but I bear the worry of the supplication. So if I am successful in the supplication, I am given the answer.) We are on the threshold of the exam, and may Allah guide me to gather these supplications and turn to Allah with them during the times of studying, during the exam, and in the case of forgetting. Supplication before studying: O Allah, I ask You for the understanding of the prophets, the memory of the messengers, and the close angels. O Allah, make our tongues full of Your remembrance, our hearts with Your fear, and our secrets with Your obedience. Indeed, You are capable of all things. And Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs. Upon entering the exam: My Lord, admit me with an admission of truth and take me out with an exit of truth, and make for me from You an authoritative helper. Supplication after studying: O Allah, I have entrusted to You what I have read and what
I have memorized and what I have learned, so return it to me when I need it, for You are capable of all things. At the beginning of answering: My Lord, expand for me my chest and ease for me my affair, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech. In the name of Allah, the Opener. O Allah, nothing is easy except what You have made easy, O the Most Merciful of the merciful. When heading to the exams: O Allah, I have placed my trust in You and entrusted my affair to You, and there is no refuge and no escape except to You. When the answer becomes difficult: There is no deity except You, glory be to You, indeed I have been of the wrongdoers. O the Living, O the Self-Subsisting, by Your mercy I seek help. My Lord, distress has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful. When forgetting: O Allah, O Gatherer of people on a Day about which there is no doubt, gather for me my lost thing. After finishing the answer, he says: Praise be to Allah who guided us to this, and we would not have been guided except that Allah guided us.
A: These supplications composed for studying and success, and varied for every situation that befalls the student during studying, are religious innovations. There is no evidence from the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding their specification for what is mentioned. The verses of the Qur'an, Prophetic hadiths, or reports mentioned in them were only revealed for causes: either specific to them, or general for asking Allah, supplicating to Him, humbling oneself before Him, seeking refuge in Him, and placing trust in Him, the Exalted, in all of a person's affairs that
befall him. However, specifying them for what is mentioned is not permissible, and it is obligatory to leave acting upon them for this specific purpose, and not to believe in their correctness in what is mentioned. Supplication is worship of Allah, so it is not valid except by what is prescribed. It is recommended for every Muslim man and woman to supplicate to Allah to make all their affairs easy for them, to increase them in knowledge and understanding in the religion, to inspire them with the right, to remind them of what they forgot, to teach them what they did not know, to make them successful in all good, and to make every difficulty easy for them, without making an innovated supplication for every situation that they persist in. That is safer for them in their religion and more likely that Allah will respond to their supplication and make them successful in all good. Indeed, Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has promised those who supplicate to Him with response and success in guidance and rightness, and the condition for that response is obedience to what Allah has prescribed and belief in Him, the Exalted, and steadfastness upon His religion, as came from Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:186] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
