Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20834 )
Q 1: It is said in the Prophetic hadiths: When a person dies, all his deeds are cut off except for three: a righteous son who prays for him, ongoing charity, and knowledge from which people benefit. The question is: If someone passes away and does not have any of these three, is it permissible for his relatives or friends to pray for him, and what are the specific supplications for that?
A 1: It is permissible for the deceased’s relatives, friends, and Muslim brothers to pray for him for forgiveness and mercy, and the like of the prescribed supplications. They receive reward and recompense for doing so. The saying of Allah the Exalted indicates this:
[Al-Hashr 59:10] There is no specific supplication designated for these relatives and friends. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
