The Lawfulness of Supplication and Charity on Behalf of One’s Parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner says in this question: “Your Eminence, my father has passed away (may Allah have mercy on him), and I want to give charity on his behalf. I am specifically asking about charity: which is better, the charity reaching him or the supplication? And what is the supplication mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah regarding supplication for one’s parents?”

Answer:
It is the Sunnah for the believer to supplicate for his parents, to seek mercy for them, to seek forgiveness for them, and to give charity on their behalf, as Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
[Al-Isra 17:23]
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy, and say: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.” [Al-Isra: 23-24]. Just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) supplicated:
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."
[Ibrahim: 41]. This is prescribed for the believer, and likewise Noah (peace be upon him) supplicated for those who entered his home and for the believing men and women.
The point is that supplication is required, so a believer supplicates for his parents, seeks forgiveness for them, asks Allah for them to enter Paradise and be forgiven, and gives charity on their behalf. This is indicated by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a questioner asked him, saying: “O Messenger of Allah, is there any dutifulness to my parents remaining by which I can be dutiful to them?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Yes, you can invoke blessings on them, forgiveness for them, carry out their final instructions after their death

And a man said: “O Messenger of Allah, my mother died suddenly and did not leave a bequest. Will she receive a reward if I give charity on her behalf?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

And he (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).
