Supplication for Entering the Mosque

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 17823 )
Q: A man entered the mosque and said: (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah the Magnificent, in His Noble Face, and in His Ancient Authority from the accursed Shaytan. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy). Another man entered and said: (Peace be upon you) without mentioning the first dhikr. A dispute arose over this, with each claiming
the right is with him. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good, about the most correct of that, may Allah reward you

A: It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the dhikr for entering the mosque what was narrated by Muslim , Abu Dawud , al-Nasa'i , Ibn Majah , and others, from Abu Humayd or Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When anyone of you enters the mosque, let him send peace upon the prophet, then let him say: "Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatika (O Allah, open to me the gates of Your mercy)." And when he leaves, let him say: "Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlika. (O Allah, I ask of you from Your bounty)."إذا دخل أحدكم المسجد فليسلم على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم ليقل: اللهم افتح لي أبواب رحمتك، وإذا خرج فليقل: اللهم إني أسألك من فضلك
Sunan Ibn Majah 772Sahih (Darussalam)
And in the narration of Muslim it is not included:
he should invoke blessing on the prophet (ﷺ)فليسلم على النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم
Sunan Abi Dawud 465Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And Ibn al-Sunni added in his narration:
And when he goes out, let him send salutations upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and let him say: O Allah, protect me from the accursed Shaytan.وإذا خرج فليسلم على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وليقل: اللهم أعذني من الشيطان الرجيم
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:580
And this addition was narrated by: Ibn Majah , Ibn Khuzaymah , Abu Hatim , and Ibn Hibban in their (Sahih). And it is also established in this what was narrated by Abu Dawud with a good chain from Haywah ibn Shurayh who said: I met 'Uqbah ibn Muslim and I said to him: It has reached me that you narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both)
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say when he entered the mosque: I seek refuge in Allah the Great, in His noble face, and in His ancient authority, from the accursed Shaytan. He said: Is that all? I said: Yes. He said: (Then when he says that, Shaytan says: He is protected from me for the rest of the day).
It was narrated by Abu Dawud with a good chain. And what was narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) and others,
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say when he entered the mosque: In the name of Allah, O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad. And when he went out, he said: In the name of Allah, O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad.أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كـان إذا دخل المسجد قال: بسم الله، اللهم صل على محمد، وإذا خرج قال: بسم الله، اللهم صل على محمد
was brought out by Ibn al-Sunni and it is a good hadith. As for beginning by saying: Peace be upon you when entering the mosque before the prescribed dhikr, it has no basis in the pure Shari'ah as far as we know. Rather, what is prescribed when entering the mosque is what we mentioned just now. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
