The first question of Fatwa number ( 5167 )
Q1: What is the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding a woman who enters the mosque while menstruating, solely to listen to the sermon?
Volume 1: It is not permissible for a woman to enter the mosque while she is menstruating or in post-natal bleeding. The basis for this is the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: It was narrated by Abu Dawud , and it was also narrated from Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: It was narrated by Ibn Majah. These two hadiths indicate that it is not permissible for a woman in a state of major ritual impurity or menstruation to remain in the mosque. However, passing through is permissible if there is a need for it and there is no fear of her defiling the mosque; as Allah the Exalted said:
[An-Nisa 4:43] And a menstruating woman is in the same category as a person in a state of major ritual impurity, and because he ordered A'ishah to bring him a need from the mosque while she was menstruating. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and saw the facades of the houses of his Companions facing into the mosque, so he said: "Turn these houses away from the mosque." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, and the people did nothing, hoping that a dispensation would be revealed for them. So he came out to them and said: "Turn these houses away from the mosque, for I do not permit the mosque for a menstruating woman or a person in a state of major ritual impurity."
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the entrance of this mosque and called out at the top of his voice: "The mosque is not permitted for a menstruating woman or a person in a state of major ritual impurity."
