Letting Garments Hang Below the Ankles

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 1583 )
Q3: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade letting garments hang , but if a person lets his garment hang without arrogance or pride, is this also forbidden? Like the European clothes we use now, if one lowers the trousers slightly below the ankles, will Allah hold us accountable for that?
A3: Letting the waistcloth, shirt, trousers, and similar garments hang below the ankles is absolutely forbidden, whether one intends arrogance and self-admiration or not; because it is a place for such things, and because of the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari , and this does not include what is of the waistcloth and similar that reaches the ankles, except that it sometimes hangs loosely so that it becomes below the ankles if one is inattentive to it, not touching it and not attending to it; because it is not a place for arrogance and pride. So from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah will not look on the Day of Judgment at him who drags his robe (behind him) out of pride." Abu Bakr said "One side of my robe slacks down unless I get very cautious about it." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "But you do not do that with a pride."من جر ثوبه خيلاء لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة، فقـال أبو بكـر : أحـد شقي إزاري يسترخي إلا أن أتعاهد ذلك منـه فقال: إنك لست ممن يفعل ذلك خيلاء
Sahih al-Bukhari 3665
narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i and al-Tirmidhi . Some scholars restricted the prohibition of letting the waistcloth and similar hang below the ankles to when a person does it with the intention of arrogance, because it came restricted to that in the story of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah will not look at the one who lets his lower wrap drag out of vanity.لا ينظر الله إلى من جر إزاره بطرًا
Sunan Ibn Majah 3573Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the correct view is to generalize the prohibition; because of the generality of the authentic hadiths in that, and because of what preceded in the story of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
